Through the teapigs ethical scheme, teapigs have made a pledge to directly help the communities with whom we work. Whilst teapigs might not put an end to world poverty overnight, we will be making a huge difference to the lives of those in the tea communities.
Noel Orphanage, Rwanda
Teapigs current project is working with the Noel Orphanage in Rwanda. The Noel Orphanage sits in the same district as the Pfunda tea estate, which produces tea for our very own english breakfast blend.
The Noel Orphanage is home to more than 650 children and young adults up to the age of 25. It costs just 49 pence a day to feed, clothe, shelter and educate each child in the orphanage. The children are well cared for and loved by the volunteer mothers who come in from the local villages, but they live in very cramped, smelly and extremely hot conditions, with four children sharing a single mattress in non-ventilated dormitories housing up to 70 in total. They survive on one meal of low grade maize per day, and their only possessions are the clothes they wear. Babies as young as a day old are often left at the gates for the orphanage to take in, and they stay there until they have to leave once they reach 25. Teapigs UK are working with the Point Foundation, who manage the donations made to the Noel Orphanage.
money raised so far
With the help of its customers teapigs UK have contributed more than £10,000 to the orphanage to date, which has gone a long way to help. However, improving the lives of the children there is very much an ongoing project, so the intention is to do much more. The pictures below show just how much the donations have helped so far:
